Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, is mourning the loss of his mother-in-law, Hajiya Rahama Bello Mukaddas, who passed away on Friday following a brief illness. She died at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Shika, Zaria.
According to a statement by Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, the younger brother of the deceased and a director at the Northern Elders Forum, Hajiya Rahama was the mother of Hajiya Hussaina, the Speaker’s first wife. She was laid to rest at the Tukur-Tukur cemetery in Zaria after Jumma’at prayers on Friday.
The Speaker expressed deep sorrow over her passing, describing her as a pillar of virtue and a guiding light in the family.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of our mother, Hajiya Rahmatu Bello Mukaddas, who was more than a mother-in-law to me,” Abbas said. “She lived a virtuous life worthy of emulation. Not only was she a peacemaker, but she was also a symbol of unity. She leaves behind a legacy of selflessness, tolerance, and love.”
A broader family statement issued by Abdul-Azeez Suleiman added:“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved sister, Hajiya Rahama, the mother of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas. Hajiya Rahama departed this world following a brief illness at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital Shika, Zaria. Her passing marks a profound loss for our family and the community at large.”
The burial was attended by family members, friends, and dignitaries, including Speaker Abbas himself, the Chief Whip of the House, Hon. Usman Bello Kumo, Minority Whip Hon. Ali Isa, district heads from the Zazzau Emirate, and several respected Islamic clerics.
Reflecting on her life, the statement further said: “Hajiya Rahama’s life was marked by her unwavering commitment to uplifting the lives of those around her. Her nurturing spirit and dedication to her family and community have left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
