Manchester, December 21, 2025 — Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has voiced concern over a potential long-term absence for club captain Bruno Fernandes following a soft tissue injury sustained during United’s 2–1 defeat to Aston Villa.
Fernandes appeared to tweak his hamstring late in the first
half and was substituted at halftime. Amorim confirmed post-match that the
injury “looks like soft tissue,” adding, “It’s going to be a while. We’ll
see.”
Despite the setback, Amorim emphasized resilience: “We
cannot use anything as an excuse. No one is going to remember these problems,
so let’s cope with that. It will make us stronger.”
The injury comes at a critical time, with United facing
Newcastle on Boxing Day and fellow midfielder Kobbie Mainoo also doubtful.
Amorim warned against panic buying in the January transfer window, stating, “We
need to find solutions internally. The club comes first.”
Teammate Diogo Dalot acknowledged the seriousness of the
situation, saying, “It’s massive. We know how tough he is. Hopefully it’s
not too bad.”
Fernandes has been a near-constant presence since joining
United in 2020, missing only 17 of 325 matches. His absence could force
tactical reshuffles and offer opportunities for emerging talents like Jack
Fletcher.
